Mark
is well known as an educationalist, is a lecturer at the Royal
Welsh College of Music, Bristol University and continues to be involved
in numerous BBC TV and Radio education projects. Mark works with Hertfordshire
County Youth Orchestra and is Music Director of Hertfordshire Wind
Sinfonia; he relishes the challenge of nurturing the musicianship of
talented young musicians. |

By
examining for TrinityGuildhall Mark feels he has the important role
of listening and offering constructive criticism to help the next generation
of musicians. Chief Examiner Keith Beniston has newly appointed Mark
as the TrinityGuildhall Brass Advisor. |
BRITISH
TROMBONE SOCIETY |
Mark
is involved with the British Trombone Society in promoting the Trombone
to all ages through workshops and concerts throughout the UK. He has
been a soloist at several National events where his playing has encouraged
many. |
1993-Present:
BBC NOW EDUCATION DEPARTMENT |
Mark
joined the BBCNOW at the same time as Helena Braithwaite who was appointed
to explore education and outreach. Mark became involved in most of
the projects from full scale schools TV broadcasts to visiting nursing
homes. BBC programmes like ‘Instrument Tales’ have become
well known in schools throughout the UK. Links with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama have been established and Mark has been heavily involved in projects to teach the next generation of teachers. |

Mark
principally lectures in Trombone but also conducts orchestras and ensembles,
carries out examining and sits on the entrance auditions panel. |
1992-1993:
ESSEX BRASS ENSEMBLE |
Essex
Brass Ensemble was one of the finest groups of its kind in the country,
with a long history of success linked to the London Symphony Orchestra.
Mark was privileged to conduct this group which contained superb young
players, many of whom are now at the top of the orchestral profession. |
1990-1993:
BISHOP STORTFORD COLLEGE |
Mark
was appointed as Professor of Trombone and Conductor of the Senior
Wind Ensemble. |
1986-1993
and 2004-Present: HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL |
Mark
was initially employed to conduct the Senior Ensembles but was soon
offered much teaching. In 1992 Director of Music John Westcombe recommended
Mark for Qualified Teacher Status to the Department of Education and
Science. This recommendation was based on Mark’s expertise, experience
and the commitment shown to the County Music Service. Mark went on to conduct the East Hertfordshire Concert Band, twice winning places at the National Festival of Music for Youth at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra then invited Mark to be the Brass Coach for their various courses. Although leaving in 1993 to pursue playing commitments Mark was invited by Peter Stark to return to this role in 2004. |
1985-1993:
LONDON BOROUGH OF WALTHAM FOREST |
Mark
became the Conductor of several orchestras, bands and brass ensembles
for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. This was specialist music
education as an after school activity. Successes included two appearances at the ‘London Brass’ ensemble finals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall conducting the Senior Brass Ensemble. |
1984-1985:
LONDON COLLEGE OF MUSIC |
Mark
became a Professor at the London College of Music, Junior Music School
where he taught general subjects including theory, aural, harmony and
counterpoint. |
| 1984-1989: WOODBRIDGE SCHOOL |
Mark was appointed Conductor of the Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Brass
Teacher at Woodbridge School, Suffolk immediately on leaving the Royal
Academy of Music in 1984. Woodbridge Symphonic Wind Orchestra gained county-wide recognition and became the regular ensemble at prestigious events for the High Sheriff of Suffolk, including Royal Visits and Charity Galas. Mark held this post for five years and left behind a successful brass department and thriving wind orchestra with over fifty members. |
